Smolenice Castle is located approximately 50 km to the north from Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia. In 8 - 12th centuries Smolenice was a Slavonic settlement. A large settlement from the Halstadt period (6-7th centuries B.C.) has been found at the Mount Molpir. The Smolenice Castle originated as a stronghold near the passes through the Small Carpathians. Only a ruin in the beginning of the 19th century, it was reconstructed by Count Palffy in this century. As a secessionist building, it was completed after the year 1945. Nowadays the castle serves the purposes of the Slovak Academy of Sciences.
In June weather in Smolenice is very pleasant, but rain can be expected. The average temperature is about 20 degrees Centigrade (68 degrees Fahrenheit).
No visa is required for citizens of most European countries. This is not true for the countries in other continents. In case of doubt, information can be obtained from a Slovak embassy or consulate.
